"Since living at River Landing, I've progressed from being a moderate exerciser to being a fitness fanatic. I walk 30-45 minutes every day, use the strength training machines, and attend yoga twice a week. I'm more flexible, have better balance, and improved posture. I'm hoping to prove the ol' adage true, "Being old is the new young!"

The Presbyterian Homes, Inc. and River Landing believe that being well involves more than physical strength or lack of disease, and it goes beyond diet and exercise. Total wellness involves a variety of principles that, when combined, result in a happier and more fulfilling life.

This concept motivated The Presbyterian Homes, Inc. (PHI) to develop a multi-faceted approach to obtaining complete wellness, which is exclusive to the residents of the three PHI communities. Our enCompass© program encourages participants to find balance in the eight dimensions of wellness: nutritional, intellectual, physical, spiritual, social, environmental, community outreach and safety. Presentations and activities are offered in all eight areas of our enCompass program to provide residents with exciting choices. Under the direction of our Wellness Director, residents of River Landing are encouraged to embark upon an individualized fitness program that addresses their specific needs and abilities.

As part of the enCompass program, River Landing provides our residents a state-of-the-art fitness center. This fitness center is divided into three distinct areas.

Aquatic Center
This area contains a heated indoor pool, a sauna, and a hot tub. The Wellness Director offers many activities in which our residents can participate including:

  • Aqua Arthritis
  • Aqua Strides (supervised water walking)
  • Gentle Joints (strength, balance, range of motion excerices)
  • Free Swim
  • Lap Swim

Fitness Center
This area is furnished with the latest in exercise equipment. The equipment is divided into two groups: the cardio-line and the strength training line.

The cardio-line is designed to increase one’s heart rate, burn calories and build endurance. The line includes treadmills, recumbent bicycles, Nustep recumbant cross trainers, and other equipment.

The strength line is equipped with six different machines designed to increase muscle. These machines are produced by Keiser and are unique because they use air pressure instead of weight to provide resistance. Residents simply dial the desired amount of resistance instead of lifting heavy weights. The machines increase muscle mass and improve the range of motion in the joints. Stronger muscles improve one’s sense of balance and reduce falls.

Fitness Studio
The aerobics room is equipped with a rubberized floor which cushions joints during exercise and provides traction to reduce falls. The room also features a mirrored wall so residents can monitor their form and ensure they are performing an exercise correctly. A balance beam extends across the front and back of the room and is used to improve balance and assist in stretching. Many classes and activities take place in this area including:

  • Balance Exercises
  • Strength & Stretch Exercises
  • Get Moving Low Impact Aerobics
  • Line Dancing
  • Tai-Chi
  • Yoga
  • Chair volleyball
  • Chair Yoga
  • Chair aerobics
